Each 400iu of vitamin D3 raises your status by 9nmol/l. In winter the average UK vit d status is around 40nmol/l . 80nmol/l is associated with lowest colon cancer incidence so that would require the average brit to use 2000iu/daily to raise status above 80nmol/l. However to reach 130nmol/l the level associated with lowest all cancer incidence requires slightly over 4000iu/daily.
The Vitamin D council has links to suppliers of 5000iu capsules. The work out at around 5p daily so it's not a big deal.
Risk assessment for Vitamin D shows 10,000iu/daily is perfectly safe. You could take up to 40,000 for a short while but if you continued for more than six months you'd eventually raise your status to over 350nmol/l and then you'd run into hypercalcemia so it's not a smart idea. Using 50,000iu/WEEKLY is a quick way of building up your status. That averages 7000iu/daily and as your body uses 4000iu/d it means you are building up your stores by consuming each day more than you use. Doing this for 8 weeks should see most people in vit d credit.
