Prostate Researcher Recognised Among Elite.

Courier-Mail Article Queensland 2-3 September 2006

Prostate Researcher Recognised Among Elite.

A Brisbane scientist’s work on prostate cancer has been chosen as one of the top 10 medical break-throughs in Australia in recent years
Queensland University of Technology researcher Judith Clements was the only Queenslander selected for the “10 of the best” booklet announced yesterday by the Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott.
The booklet lauded the most important medical break-throughs funded in the past few years by the National Health and Medical Council.
Professor Clements, from QUT’s new Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, has studied hormone-related cancers like prostate and ovarian tumours for the past 15 years.
She has been given more than $1.7 million by the NHMRS since 2000 specifically to pursue a major breakthrough in detecting prostate cancer, which kills 2500 Australian men every year.
Her team discovered an enzyme called kallikrein 4 (K4) which could prove to be a far more accurate indicator of the disease than the current warning signs.
